Dr. Waleed Ahmed Khoja

 

Biography

Dr. Waleed Khoja was born in September 4th, 1961 in Taif, Saudi Arabia. After finishing High school with distinguished score at finals (best seventh in the central area), he joined King Saud University Medical College. He gained his bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1988. At the same year, he joined the Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital as a resident in Neurology Department. 

In 1992, he was the first candidate to join Neurology Training Fellow Ship Program held by the Medical College of King Saud University. He is the first Neurologist to gain a local Neurology fellowship degree from Saudi Arabia. 

In 1997, he went to Germany, where he received extensive training in Neuro-intensive care management. This took place in the Neurology Department, University Hospital of Heidelberg. This training was under the direct supervision of Professor Dr. med. Werner Hacke.

Dr. Khoja is currently the head of Neurology Department and head of stroke unit in Armed Forces Hospital, Riyadh. He has great interest in  hyper acute therapy for all types of stroke and good experience in management of brain edema. He, also, has vast experience in Transcranial Doppler and duplex.

Dr. Khoja introduced new modalities of stroke treatment in his hospital, including hypothermia in malignant MCA ischemic stroke and anoxic brain insult, intraventricular rt-PA for IVH, intra-arterial thrombolysis and cerebral sinuses thrombolysis. He is conducted and still conducting numerous research projects on different aspects of stroke concerning Saudis. These include a study on stroke in young, the AVM study, the carotid stenosis register, the intracranial arteriosclerosis register, the PFO study, the cerebral hemodynamics study in young Saudis with sickle cell disease and many other..

A large number of mini-symposia, campaigns and workshops on cerebrovascular diseases and Transcranial Doppler were organized by Dr. Khoja across Saudi Arabia. Also, more than 3 stroke days were organized for the public by Dr. Khoja.

Dr. Khoja is the founder and chairman of the Saudi Advisory Group Against Stroke. He is also a member of the National Committee of Hypertension,  the Saudi Advisory Group for multiple Sclerosis. He is a member in the Neurology committee of the Saudi Council for Health Specialties, and the head of the Neurology National Board Exam Committee. Lately, he was selected to become a director-in large in the World Stroke Federation.

Besides his medical interests, Dr. Khoja is also experienced in designing medical data base and registries. He created a comprehensive data base with a register environment for the whole department of Neurology. Also, he is the designer and administrator of the Neurology Department web pages, www.rkh-neurology.com , the Saudi Advisory Group Against Stroke web pages, www.sagas.org.sa  , the Saudi Advisory Group for multiple Sclerosis web pages, www.saudims.org.sa and lately the WSF website, www.worldstrokefederation.org. Dr. Khoja is married and has 3 children, Ahmed (born 1999), Lama (born 1992) and Mohammed (born 1996). He dedicates his work on the WSF website to his children.
